Changes in Kallio, Cafe Luft

As the rails are being laid for the new number 9 tram route along Aleksis Kiven katu, it seems that new lease of life is being breathed into this part of town. This area, the outer most reaches of Kallio, is filled with cheap bars, porn shops and "thai massage" (thai massage loosely translating to sex services).

There are however exceptions, the newest of which is Cafe Luft. Situated on the corner between Fleminginkatu and Aleksis Kiven katu, this new cafe/bar provides clean and comfortable view onto the continuous commotion and everyday sleaze of Kallio.

Luft is sparsely decorated with small tables and trendy but comfortable seating. Prices are relatively high, but this helps to keep the alcoholics out. Having only been once, a few days after the place opened, I'm not really sure how the place is developing and what crowd it's attracting, but it never seems to be empty so I guess thats a good sign.
